Experiments do not always go as predicted. Playing around with the different greens and different flavors has been a little tricky at times. It becomes even more of a struggle when I want my family to enjoy the smoothie as well. They are not quite as eager to drink the unique smoothies that I concoct in the kitchen.
This morning, I was rushed and knew that peeling oranges would take too long. I threw some baby greens in a blender with some fruit and pushed go. The result was not as appetizing as it looked. That just goes to show that you need to know the flavors you are blending before you begin to blend. The baby arugula looked harmless, but it had an odd kick that put off the flavor of the smoothie.
I am blessed to have an experimenter in the family. My middle son loves to mix things to see what he can create. He followed me into the kitchen and we began adding flavors to help curb the taste of the arugula. We ended up with enough smoothie to feed the whole family, and possibly a small army, but it did taste much better.
Day Six Menu
Breakfast: one handful of watercress, one handful of baby arugula, one hand full of leaf lettuce, about ¼ cup of raspberries, ¼ cup of blueberries, 1 cup of cranberry/grape juice, and two bananas. I made it through about 2/3rds of the 12 oz, but then my son and I added one orange, ½ cup of cranberry/grape juice, ½ fresh pineapple and another banana. I added that to what was left so I will end up drinking more than I normally do.
Lunch: I went for the rolls again – 1 ½ total – I really enjoy the avocado mayonnaise!
Dinner: It was off the map again and instead of the recipe for day six I choose to go with the roasted butternut squash. I had about one quarter of the squash and was amazed that there was no need for additional flavoring. I added the rest of my morning smoothie and a baked potato and was more than satisfied.
Note: Avoid drinking and eating things that you do not like just because they are “good for you.” Find the flavors that you enjoy and then expand from there. Force feeding the negative never ends in positive results.
